Composers' Presentation Day

An opportunity to explore New Instrumental Music for Fingerstyle Ukulele

Sunday 22 June, 2025

Venue: Coorparoo Bowls Club: 9.30am-4pm

32 Riddings St, Coorparoo QLD 4151, Australia

Content

This full day workshop for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles will showcase new instrumental music for both High G and Low G ukulele by national and international composers Samantha Muir, Paul Mansell, Sally Carter, Tony Mizen, Choan Galvez and Cathy Welsford. The selected pieces provide many opportunities for learning both skills and musical understandings.

A 40-page book of the pieces, including technical notes and advice, will be provided for you to keep. It is not expected that you will be able to play all the pieces at the end of the day, or even at the recommended tempo. Rather, we will teach you how to build an understanding of each piece, how to efficiently approach it and how to practise it. You will then be able to apply your developing knowledge and techniques to learning other pieces.

Prerequisites: To participate you must be able to read TAB or music notation with reasonable confidence and have a good working knowledge of the main major, minor and seventh chords.

You will need both a High G and a Low G ukulele which can be soprano, concert or tenor. These workshops do not cater for baritone ukulele.

You will also need a music stand, pen/pencil, plectrum and water bottle.

Bonus Free Concert: The Composers Presentation Day includes a short concert at the end of the day by Sally Carter, Cathy Welsford and The Wild Women of Anywhere Beach.

Food: Your workshop fee includes morning and afternoon tea/coffee and energy-sustaining snacks (gluten free). You will need to BYO lunch or purchase it from local cafes or the club.

Cost: $120 per person at https://www.trybooking.com/DBXBF

$10 discount for BUMS members (Brisbane Ukulele Musicians Society)!!

REVIEWS

This was an inspiring day. It moved me out of my comfort zone rut, and opened my eyes to new possibilities and ways of putting songs together. Being a group of ukers of varying abilities, my first thought was 'How are they going to be able to cater for such wide differences?' But Sally and Cathy are also wonderful teachers and they pitched the day so well that everyone came away having learned something new. Playing together at the end of the day, we were sounding fabulous, having had a fun day filled with laughs and learning.

Last April, I was delighted to have the opportunity to take part in the Composer's Day organised by Cathy Welsford and Sally Carter. The teaching was spot on, the learning actually stuck and I was thrilled to discover that I was able to use knowledge gained in this workshop to improve my overall ukulele playing. I cannot recommend this experience enough. If you have the chance to take part, jump at it.
